Place is integral in our stories. It roots characters, creates spaces for us to explore and leaves a lasting impression long after we’ve stopped reading. But shaping a compelling setting for a story can be difficult.  How do we pin down the world in our heads, whether that’s real or imagined?

Join Nadia Henderson, author of Tools for Surviving A Storm, for an explorative workshop on creating multi-layered settings and places in your writing. There will be exercises, prompts and lots of time to write – making it perfect for anyone who finds writing place a challenge.

This 90-minute online workshop hosted by Dear Damsels is open to everyone – whether you are new to writing, an experienced writer or just looking for a space to experiment and play.

Nadia Henderson is a London-born writer living in rural Sweden. Her debut short story collection, Tools For Surviving A Storm, traverses the boundaries between the human and natural worlds and how they blur. Her fiction has been shortlisted by the Bridport Short Story Prize and longlisted for both the Cambridge and Commonwealth Short Story Prizes. Nadia is currently working on a second collection, exploring how we connect to each other in a time of climate crisis.

This online workshop will take place on Zoom. Numbers are limited. We have a number of free places for those who are not able to afford the workshop but would like to attend – please email contact@deardamsels.com. Participants will need a good internet connection and ideally a working microphone and camera on their device to take part. The session will include a short refreshment break.

In a transporting, original collection, Nadia Henderson examines the lines between nature and the human world through stories set in landscapes both brutal and beautiful.

Journeying from Sweden’s ancient woods to the floodplains of the American South, the women in these stories navigate loneliness, loss and what it means to be alive in an ever-changing world.
