by Molly Whyte

Face to face
In a brunch spot
Ready for Instagram.
Their phones lie
Snug and silent
Under the table.

How have you been?

First date nerves
Despite hundreds of days
Together, years ago.
As eggs arrive
They hungrily
Share new stories.

Why has it taken us so long to do this?

Doubt and fear
That there would be
Nothing left to say.
Plus schedules,
Jobs, boyfriends,
Busyness.

I’ve missed you.

They both smile,
Relieved to have
Not been forgotten.
Once the bill
Is split evenly
They leave together.
